Allow me to introduce Downtown's Sweetheart--Vashtie Kola. De la renaissance woman extraordinaire! Director, tastemaker, party producer, designer, and universal fly chica known for bridging the underground cool with the industry mainstream. Let's not even mention she is the first female designer to collaborate with Nike's Jordan line. Yes I said JORDAN! Oh theres more! She is also the innovator of a dope party concept called 1992 catching love across the globe as we speak. She have been featured in the New York Times, Nylon magazine, and Complex Magazine.
I've been following her for a minute now, since she first started posting at riottt. She's in the collective of people who keep me inspired on my daily grind.

Whats good?
She just relaunched vashtie.com check it out, take notes, get inspired, read her blog. She's constantly hustling. Defiantly a role model for the business minded ladies out there. No question there!

Whats really good?
Last year she debuted her line VIOLETTE, now she's back again with her summer 09 collection titled "Fangs of New York". Very NY inspired, very minimal, with sharp muted graphics. In here lookbook (below) she mimics that same concept, with small spaces, regular hot flash, and a play on the vampire thing with gore and fangs. This line will be sold in the infamous Collete store in Paris. All this from your average around the way girl? Maybe she's not average.

PECULIAR FIND: Vintage photos of Movie Theaters of Downtown Raleigh

For people with an old soul, and an eye for vintage like me, this is right up your alley! Pictures of good ol' old downtown Raleigh Theaters!
The UNC Library has created a neat little website called Going To The Show as part of their Documenting The American South series. The site focuses on the introduction of moving pictures(1896) all the way to the end of the silent era(1930) and a little bit beyond. The site covers up to 45 cities in NC. It also has this cool feature where it overlays google maps with old insurance maps which are marked with the old locations of these architectural gems. Next time I travel to Raleigh, I plan on visiting some of these spots to see how many have been replaced, and how many of them are restored and still running.

With a title like that attached to his namesake, you would expect this interview to be the kind you'd have with a rockstar bellowing about his genius.

Fascinating blog I must say. The majority of HTJ's content is vintage photos of Ivy League/ Preppy styles around college campuses from an vintage mens magazine called Mens Club over the years.

I'm guilty of being a secret fan of Preppy style. I mean seeing my Pops dress like this as a teen made it a bit awkward. BUT now I have a better understanding of the sophisticate.

When it comes to having a keen eye, where would fashion be without the camera? An urban legend right?

I love their garments, they have a military/preppy vibe going on for them. Instant fav material indeed! I discovered Apolis Activism earlier this year, but somehow failed to make a post about them. In most cases when it comes to menswear I don't have a particular favorite because everybody brings something new to the table. Thats pretty fair right? But for Apolis I had to bend the rules! Apolis Activism was started by three brothers-Raan,Shea, and Stenn Parton back in 2004. Most notable by their red stitch resembling the first aid emblem. Whats with the funny name? Well heres what their site said:

They anchored this vision in the word Apolis, which translates as «a citizen of no country» — where there are no flags and no borders, humanity is our common cause and greatest priority.

Character over quality, I think you can decipher the rest!

Fashion: It itself is a beast that must be tamed. There are no definite rules to it when it comes to self expression. And don't make the fatal mistake of attaching a price tag to your manhood.

Trends:Are like vampires at sunrise, popular for the night, but won't last an eternity.

Celebrity:Only know their looks are far from their character. Follow them at your own risk.

Style:If your garments invoke that boyhood mischievousness in the midst of adulthood, then you've been evangelized, welcome to the club.

Myths: No your not gay just because you fancy threads,nor are you a womanizer.
You just like to regulate your swagger carefully.

Menswear for 09 is coming along real mellow mellow.

During men's fashion week (via Paris) one of my fav designers Yohji Yamamoto presented his Fall 09 collection. I can't express enough how we need this man to take over urban fashion! This man is raw genius! I mean if you've been following him you'll know his keen detail to aesthetics and his use of bagginess--so he should be able to sympathize with the hood culture.
If that were the case--Goodbye Rocawear, LRG, Sean Jean, etc. say hello to the badguy.

Wow! Its been a while since I last posted. Been busy trying to find a new job in the mist of being laid off combined with a few minor personal issues.
None of these things are beneficial to my long term goal of owning my own boutique, but I'm learning the "art" of "allowing". All in all if I keep a keen positive outlook, I'll meet my goals.

You know I'm a sneaker head right? Not an elitist or anything, just an individual who knows whats relevant to my tastes. And when I find a brand that I enjoy, I support it. Common Projects is one of these brands. Even though they are a "brand" they don't flaunt it, and this is what I love about them. These shoes make a powerful statement in style, while being uber minimalistic. I don't hold back any due praises for CP creators Peter Poopat, and Flavio Girolami.

I'm trying to stay positive because I know my pocket isn't running too deep right now to buy a pair. Tsk Tsk....

Not only is she stylish and chic, but uber talented! She is an illustrator---turned VJ from London.

A very creative indidvidual all around. Shes also involved with some japanese fashion labels too--SO WATCH OUT FOR HER! (check out the adidas above she customized herself! Now kidz, this is wifey material right here! lol!)

I think this vj thing might be the way of the future concerning artists now a days. If not, this is my first time hearing about something like this so bare with me.
